FI: What is in the box ?

DB: ‘It is a clay material called sculpey. Sculpey is a clay that if kept in a cool area will not harden. It is great if you want to adjust something you created.’

FI: Then what?

DB: ‘After you are happy with the final creation, it can be placed in a ordinary oven. Make sure your creation is small enough to fit in the oven.’

To begin the starting point is always the idea. In this case i wanted to make a futureistic wolverine, old and tired but still able to fight like a warrior. I do a quick sketch (not pictured) on paper. then gather the materials. Here an unfinished wood base, bendable garden wire, aluminum foils, culpey and a variety of sculpey tools were used, and can be found at any arts and craft store.

The image on the left had a hole drilled half way down the center of the wood. it was the same size as the thinkness of the garden wire. The garden wire then goes into the hole with a glue or epoxy (I used metal epoxy) then I built a skeletal system with more garden wire twisted, and buliked up with the foil. The more foil you use the less sculpey used, and thats good.

As you can see I developed the entire body and head, but not the hands. Hands are delicate because of their size, so i wait till the end for those. However I would leave extra space on the garden wire to stick the hands on.

This wolverine is destined to have armour. Once the body foundation looks the way i want, I started to build upon it with another layer of sculpey. Details like Scratches and dents were added at this point.

Let there be hands !!! Small but detailed. The hands did not have any wire in them for fingers, but because this character has claws I used a thinner copper garden wire for the claws structure.

Sculpey tends to sag at times, either when it is to heavy (like his left arm was in this model) or if it is paper thin. While I liked the copper wire for claws, they were just a to thin. So carefully I wrapped the copper claws with sculpey. After a few trial and errors I found the right thickness for the claws.

Once the sculpt is finished, into the oven it went following the sculpey box's instructions. The paint job includeds multiple coats for the sculpt. and wood stain for the wood.
